How it is worked out
Two formulas, one post.
- Interactions
- Likes + comments + shares + saves, averaged per post.
- Rate by followers
- Interactions ÷ followers × 100. Best for comparing accounts, since follower counts are public.
- Rate by reach
- Interactions ÷ reach × 100. Best for comparing your own posts, since it judges the content rather than its distribution.
- Reach rate
- Reach ÷ followers × 100. How much of your audience a typical post gets in front of.
- Shares and saves share
- (Shares + saves) ÷ interactions × 100. A rough signal of depth: content people keep or pass on.
- Worked example
- 620 likes + 48 comments + 36 shares + 74 saves = 778 interactions. On 18,400 followers that is 4.23%. On a reach of 9,200 it is 8.46%.
This calculator counts likes, comments, shares and saves. Some tools add profile visits or link clicks. Pick one definition and keep it, or month-on-month comparisons stop meaning anything.
Both, for different jobs. Use the rate by reach to compare your own posts, because it judges the content. Use the rate by followers to compare accounts, because follower counts are public.
They are sample planning figures written for this demo site, not platform data. Real ranges vary by category, format and country. Treat the band as a starting point for your own log.
Because a typical post reaches only a share of your followers. A smaller denominator gives a larger percentage. If reach is higher than followers, the post travelled beyond your audience and the rate by reach will be the lower of the two.
